Spanish “apes” demand repeal of abortion law

Printer-friendly version

A group of Spanish pro-life campaigners have called for the repeal of Spain’s abortion law in response to a new law protecting the Great Apes from the moment of conception.

The campaigners dressed as primates and gathered outside the headquarters of the Partido Popular – Spain’s ruling political party.

The Spanish parliament recently passed a new law which protects the Great Apes from the moment of conception from abortion and foetal experimentation. But the protestors highlighted the fact that unborn humans remain unprotected from both abortion and experimentation.

“Savage and inhuman”

The demonstrators from Derecho a Vivir (Right to Life Association) called on Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to fulfil his campaign promise to overturn the abortion law passed by his predecessor.

One of the protestors in ape costume commented: “The government is deaf to the voice of millions of Spanish who already asked to repeal the abortion law… There is nothing more savage and inhuman than abortion”.

Ignacio Arsuaga, President of Derecho a Vivir, said: “It just doesn’t make any sense that the law protects the lives of several animal species and yet does not apply to human beings”.

Petition

The group have collected over 400,000 signatures for a petition demanding a repeal of the abortion law.

Arsuaga added: “Because of this law 300 unborn babies die violent deaths every day in Spain—more than a hundred thousand a year—and that is something that a democratic society cannot afford”.

The Spanish Minister of Justice Alberto Ruiz-Gallardónhas promised to introduce anabolition of abortion bill by the end of March.

Human dignity

Andrea Williams of Christian Concern said:

“It is remarkable that a civilised society would protect the lives of animals from abortion whilst leaving unborn humans unprotected.

“Derecho a Vivir have done a great job in highlighting this discrepancy. We are in a very dark place if we are less troubled by humans being aborted than apes.

“Human life has a special dignity because we have been made in the image of God. This should be recognised in the laws of any civilised country”.
