Two action points from Alive and Kicking Campaign

It is over 15 years since Parliament considered our abortion legislation. With record numbers of abortions being performed and the legislation being disregarded by many in the medical profession it is time for a review of the legislation.

Encouragingly, an growing number of MPs share our opinion and an Early Day Motion (EDM) has been tabled by Geraldine Smith MP, as follows:

“That this House endorses Recommendation 77 of the Report of the Science and Technology Committee, Human Reproductive Technologies and the Law; and calls on the Government to set up a joint committee of both Houses to consider the scientific, medical and social changes in relation to abortion that have taken place since 1967, with a view to presenting options for new legislation.”

EDMs are not debated on the floor of the House of Commons but have traditionally been a very effective way of drawing particular issues to the Government's attention. The more MPs who sign an EDM, the greater the likelihood of the the Government taking some action, particularly on an issue like abortion where the Government has indicated that it would rather not get involved.

It would be very helpful if you could write to your MP to ask him/her to give the EDM their support. Your letter should be brief and polite and should state that EDM no. 2379 entitled 'Review of Abortion Legislation' has been tabled and that it would be helpful if your MP could sign the EDM to indicate his/her support.

Alive and Kicking Campaign Mobile Phone Recycling Scheme 2006

‘We want your old mobile phones’

  • Did you know there are over 100 million mobile phones lying redundant around the UK in drawers, desks and cupboards?

  • According to the latest annual government statistics 206,956 babies died from abortion in 2005 in the UK and the numbers continue to rise. A recent public opinion poll commissioned by Alive and Kicking revealed that 81% of the public believe that there are too many abortions and ways should be found of reducing the number. The mood has turned and people now recognise the terrible extent of the abortion tragedy. The public is with us, MPs want a review of the Abortion Act, and newspapers and TV are making it headline news. Alive and Kicking: the campaign to make abortion rare continues to draw attention to the abortion tragedy. But your support is essential to make change in the law unstoppable.
