How to download a video to play when not connected to the Net

Printer-friendly version

Instructions to download a video

The videos in our Mediacentre only play when the PC you are using is connected to the Internet.

We have been receiving requests on how to download key videos to play on PCs orlaptops when they aren't connected to the Internet - typically when a church wants to project a video at a Sunday service.

You can download the video as a Quicktime MOV File or you can download the Flash Video FLV Version of the file. For the Quicktime version, you must have Quicktime Player 7 already installed on your PC or Mac. Then you only have to follow step 1. For Flash Video version, you must follow all three steps.

Follow these instructions carefully:

1. Download the Video FLV file or Quicktime MOV File

The first step is to download the video file itself that you want to play when not connected to the internet. You obviously need to do this step on a PC that is connected to the internet. If the computer not connected to the net is a different one, you will need a USB Pen Drive to transfer the downloaded video from this machine to the one you want to play it on. If using a USB Pen Drive, plug it in now before proceeding.

RIGHT click over a link in the list below for the video you are interested in, and then select Save Target As… or Save Link As… from the pop up menu that appears. Choose a location to save the file in - such as My Documents or the drive letter of the USB Pen Drive.

If you downloaded the Quicktime version, the file will now load into Quicktime Player - simply load Quicktime and choose File & Open File, and select this downloaded file on the projection PC.

2. For Flash Video Download : Install Adobe Media Player (AMP)

On the machine that is to project the video when disconnected from the Net, you must install Adobe Media Player. To do this, you must temporarily connect that actual machine to the Internet. Click on the icon below on that machine when ready to install AMP :

INSTALL ADOBE MEDIA PLAYER

(Above link will open a new web browsing window)

3. Flash Video Download : Play Video File

We strongly recommend you play with the projection PC and the AMP software before the service in which you wish to project it, so you are familiat with how it works.

Disconnect the projection PC from the net. Go to Start / Programs and select Adobe Media Player (probably in the Adobe pop out menu). The black looking player should appear on the screen. Now open My Documents, or the USB Pen Drive where you stored the FLV file downloaded at step one. Drag that file with the mouse and drop it over the AMP player. The file will load and play. To make the video play full screen on the PC, click on the following icon, lower right of the video area in the AMP program :

Once the video has been played once, it now appears in the AMP play list so the next time you load AMP the video will be in the list and all you have to do is click on the icon to make it play. However it may not start playing back from the start - so be warned!
