IVF babies at greater risk of suffering mental health disorders

Printer-friendly version

A new study has found that children born through fertility treatment are more likely to suffer mental health problems compared to children who are born naturally.

The study, conducted by researchers in Denmark, followed the medical records of 124,000 children born to women with registered fertility problems over a period of 20 years.

It concluded that children who were conceived through fertility procedures, such as IVF, had a 33%, higher risk of developing psychiatric disorders, ranging from anxiety to autism and schizophrenia.

The study’s lead researcher, Dr Allen Jensen, said the findings were unable to establish whether the increased risk was associated with faulty genes passed down from the mother or to fertility treatment itself.
