1.8 million children grow up outside marriage

Printer-friendly version

Nearly two million children have been born to unmarried parents since 1980.

Studies show that couples who do not marry before they have their first child are far less likely to stay together than those who wed first. The decline in marriage and the accompanying family breakdown mean that, over the past 35 years, 1.8 million children have grown up without both parents.
