Huge rise in young 'transgender' referrals

Printer-friendly version

The number of young people being referred to a national centre for help with 'transgender issues' has increased nearly fivefold in just four years.

London's Tavistock and Portman Clinic says that 441 under-18s were referred to it in 2013/14, up from 91 in 2009/10. Figures for how many went on to 'transition' are not available. A BBC Newsbeat article carries an interview with one teenager whose mother says, "people are more accepting now of transgender people."
