Tories set to lose votes over same-sex 'marriage' proposals

Printer-friendly version

A new poll has revealed that voters are turning away from the Conservative Party due to the Government’s proposals to redefine marriage.

The ComRes poll revealed that 62 per cent of voters and 68 per cent of Tories believe that “marriage should continue to be defined as a life-long exclusive commitment between a man and a woman”.

18 per cent said that the proposals would make them less likely to vote Conservative in the next general election. Only 7 per cent said that they were more likely to vote Conservative.

65 per cent agree that David Cameron’s proposals are “more to do with trying to make the Conservative Party look trendy and modern” rather than his own personal convictions on the issue.

George Osborne

The figures call into question recent comments made by Chancellor George Osborne that redefining marriage would help the Conservative Party win the next general election.

Only 23 per cent of voters said they believed redefining marriage would help the Tories stay in power, whilst 40 per cent disagreed.

63 per cent said that many people who disagree with same-sex “marriage” refrain from expressing their opposition “for fear of being called a bigot”.

“These findings show that British people value the institution of marriage and the majority of them don’t want to see it redefined,” said Andrea Williams, Chief Executive of Christian Concern.

“They also show that the Tories are misguided if they think this is a vote winner. The Great British public can see through the policy as an attempt to ‘de-toxify’ the Tory brand”.
