Pray for MPs as they seek the way forward on Brexit

Printer-friendly version

Following the rejection of the deal that Prime Minister Theresa May has agreed with EU negotiators, there is a great need for Christians to pray that the government, MPs and other leaders will find the best way forward. The coming months could lead to significant upheaval and change.

In these unsettling times, we trust in the Lord.

Leaving the EU won't single-handedly solve our root problem - that we have failed to recognise Jesus at the heart of society. Nor would staying in the EU automatically lead to a united, safe, prosperous, faithful nation under God. There is no simple, political solution that will put everything right.

Nevertheless, as Christians, we're called to pray for "all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way." (1 Timothy 2:2)

By praying for MPs over the coming weeks, today and over the coming weeks, we can play our part in influencing the government for good, we can see God's hand at work in what happens and we can demonstrate to the wider world our care and concern for the direction of the UK.

Please pray:

If it helps you to pray, please use the points below, along with their biblical references.

Please pray that:

  • What transpires in regard to Brexit would be best for God's kingdom - (Matthew 6:33)
  • Politicians would find the best way to honour the result of the referendum (Proverbs 2:6)
  • MPs would put the needs of the UK above any personal ambition (Philippians 2:3-4)
  • MPs would have wisdom on what to do next (James 1:5)
  • The public would react peacefully to the outcome of the decisions made by MPs, giving no opportunity to those who seek violence. (Psalm 140:1-2)

To help you think more about how to pray for the UK in turbulent times such as this, we've republished an article by the Rev. Canon J John, on praying in interesting times. We hope that you find it useful as you continue to reflect on these issues.

Andrea Williams will be leading some of the prayers at the Day of Prayer for Britain, organised by David Hathaway (Eurovision Mission to Europe) on 26 January. For more information and to book your place, visit the event's website.
