The influence of radical Islam is growing in the UK and as an ideology it seeks to shape our political and social landscape. From the introduction of sharia councils, and Islamic finance, to the implications on freedom of speech and women’s rights, the presence of Islamism in the UK has great repercussions for all of us. At Christian Concern we aim to raise awareness of the impact that this may have on the UK and offer a Christian response.

    The Christian Legal Centre is currently helping and supporting ‘Sarah’ (not her real name), a survivor of an Islamic sex-grooming gang, and raising awareness of the epidemic of Islamic sex-grooming gangs. Now, as more gangs come to light and are convicted, the injustices that exist within our State are becoming ever clearer. The problem is even more widespread than first thought, and the need for the Church to step up and act is even more urgent.

    The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) last week ruled that an Austrian woman who was penalised by the Austrian courts for insulting Muhammad did not have her rights to freedom of expression under the European Convention of Human Rights violated. Tim Dieppe examines the facts around the case and how the Court reached its decision. He concludes that the ECHR has set a very dangerous precedent for free speech.

    Tim Dieppe, head of public policy at Christian Concern, discusses the government’s response to Baroness Cox’s question to the House of Lords about helping victims of sex-grooming, such as in the case of ‘Sarah’, who is currently being supported by the Christian Legal Centre. He argues that the government is in denial about the Islamic connection to sex-grooming gangs and says it has a long way to go before it really addresses the issue.
