Florida clinic offers abortion coupons to low-income women

Printer-friendly version

An Orlando abortion clinic has caused outrage by offering discount coupons to women on low incomes.

Coupons

Orlando Women’s Center, shut down in June this year, reopened its doors in July offering discount abortions. It has begun circulating $50 discount coupons for abortions performed on a Sunday.

The clinic is open seven days a week and is working with borrowed equipment.

It is not clear when the clinic distributed the coupons, but reflects clearly who they are targeting.

“An abortion center that’s open seven days a week in Florida is giving away coupons to poor women in a crisis pregnancy so they can save money on their abortions,” said Rachel Burgin, executive director of Florida Right to Life.

Dr. James Pendergraft

Physician Dr. James Pendergraft, who runs the clinic, has already had his licence revoked on five occasions, according to WFTV.

In June all his equipment was seized as part of proceedings in an unpaid $36 million medical malpractice judgment.

His licence was most recently revoked in April after performing an illegal third-trimester abortion. He said he was not aware the pregnant woman was in her third-trimester.

Pendergraft has also reportedly been accused of performing faulty abortions.

The doctor was able to reopen the clinic because he is not performing any medical procedures, instead delegating to six other physicians.

In the process of recovering both his equipment and medical licence, Pendergraft said: “I've done nothing that I thought was inappropriate, illegal, immoral or wrong.” However many in the state of Florida disagree.
