"Shameful" bid to silence 2 million critics of embryo research

Printer-friendly version
Last week, it was revealed that the British Government had briefed European lawmakers against proposals put forward by the European Citizens' Initiative, 'One of Us', to outlaw EU funding of activities that destroy human embryos.

Christian Concern and CORE (Comment on Reproductive Ethics) were instrumental in helping the “One of Us” petition to gather nearly two million signatures across Europe, forcing an historic debate at the EU Parliament on 10 April.

The Government has been taken to task by the Head of Public Policy at the Christian Medical Fellowship, Philippa Taylor, for “abandoning some basic ethical principles” in its desire to keep Britain at the forefont of world biomedical research.
In her blog, Philippa Taylor criticsed politicians for ignoring the views of more than 1.8 million people who signed the 'One of Us' petition, saying she hoped that European lawmakers will "stand up to our Government's bullying and to the heavily vested financial interests in destroying embryos for research".
