Assisted Dying could be Legalised

There has been a call for a debate on assisted dying by 100 MPs who have signed a motion put forward by David Winnick MP.

The Bill was designed to tighten the law so that those who encourage assisted suicide by displaying material on a website could be prosecuted. Unfortunately, pro-euthanasia groups managed to get amendments tabled during the Public Bill Committee to remove the word “assisting” from the Bill so that only “encouraging” suicide would be a criminal offence.

CCFON believes that legalising assisted suicide would be wrong and that it would be impossible to protect vulnerable people, who may feel obliged to end their lives in order to avoid being a burden to their families.

Threat to Free Speech

The offence of “inciting hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation” is part of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 (“CJI Act”). Lord Waddington successfully inserted a free speech clause into that Act, which clause 58 of the Coroners and Justice Bill now seeks to remove. The offence itself is not yet in force.

Christians do not believe in inciting hatred of any kind against any person but to love as Christ loved. Part of love is speaking truth. Clause 58 provides a vital protection for Christians to be able to speak Biblical Truth on behaviour and sexual ethics.
