The French National Assembly has approved a Bill introducing same-sex ‘marriages’ in a 329-229 vote.
The Bill, pushed by President François Hollande's Socialists, will also permit same-sex couples to adopt children.
It comes despite a mass rally in Paris to oppose the legislation attended by almost 1 million people last month.
Demonstrators emphasised the right of children to be raised by a mother and a father, and saw opposition subsequently increase with a number of homosexuals joining in.
But the ‘Marriage for all’ Bill was nevertheless passed by France’s lower house of Parliament in a majority vote this week.
The Bill will now go to the Senate, which is also dominated by the Socialists and their allies.
