Public backs Christian bakers in 'gay marriage' cake row

Printer-friendly version

An opinion poll has found that nearly two in three British adults (65%) disapprove of the prospect of legal action being taken against the Christian bakers who declined to make a cake supporting same-sex 'marriage'.

The YouGov poll found that only 25% approved of legal action being taken by the Equality Commission of Northern Ireland (ECNI).

Overall, a majority (56%) said that they thought it was acceptable for the bakery not to make the cake bearing the slogan ‘support gay marriage’.

‘Legal action threatened’

Last week, it was reported that the ECNI had told Ashers Baking that it would face legal action unless it apologised for not producing a cake backing same-sex 'marriage'.

The Christian family-run bakery was asked to make a cake decorated with the slogan 'support gay marriage' but declined on the basis that to do so would compromise the family’s Christian beliefs.

When they declined the order, they offered a refund which was collected by the customer.

But now the bakery has been threatened with legal action by the equality watchdog if it doesn't offer compensation within seven days.

The bakery is being supported by the Christian Institute.
