Jersey unveils plan for same-sex 'marriage'

Printer-friendly version

Jersey's Chief Minister has unveiled plans to introduce same-sex 'marriage' by the end of 2017.

Following a consultation on the island, a report published this week proposes that legislation be introduced to allow for both civil and religious ceremonies for same-sex couples although it also suggests protections be included for religious organisations and officials who do not wish to conduct them. Jersey introduced civil partnerships in 2012.

"Prime Minister David Cameron announced at the 2011 Conservative Party conference that he supported redefining marriage to include same-sex couples. The Government is now planning to introduce such proposals by 2015. The plan has sparked a huge, passionate and ongoing national debate.

This leaflet examines some of the issues, including the meaning of marriage, the nature of different relationships, the challenges to religious freedom and the effect that same-sex marriage may have on children and on society at large."
