Commentator slams ‘celebrity atheism’

Printer-friendly version

A Telegraph columnist has criticised ‘celebrity atheism’ after recent comments from atheists Richard Dawkins and Stephen Fry received significant media attention.

In his column, Tim Stanley writes: “Celebrity atheism was a big thing ten years ago but now is old hat and rather tiresome.”

Mad

He makes reference to a Richard Dawkins tweet in which he advocated sending “erotic videos” to theocracies. Dawkins deleted the tweet shortly afterward.

“Perhaps even he realised how utterly mad it was”, wrote Stanley.

Upset

And in response to Stephen Fry’s recent tirade on Irish TV about God being “capricious, mean-minded, stupid”, he says: “Dear Stephen imagines that he’s the first person in history to wonder why folks suffer. He’s not.

“He is, however, strangely upset about something that he doesn't even believe in. Who gets angry about an imaginary conversation?”

Boring

He adds: “Oh, there are atheist thinkers out there whose opinions are worth hearing and there are eloquent people of faith ready to respond. But why must it always be the same old bores boring on about the subject? This yawnfest has to stop.”
